What Is Cyber Essentials?

Could your business be vulnerable to a cyber-attack? If the answer is ‘yes’ or you’re not sure, it’s time to consider Cyber Essentials. Here, we look at what it is and why you need it.

What is Cyber Essentials?

In June 2014, the UK Government launched the Cyber Essentials scheme, which is designed to help businesses protect themselves against cyber-crime and keep their data safe online. It works by identifying key technical security controls that businesses should put in place.

Why does your business need protection?

Experiencing a cyber-attack can be immensely costly and disruptive for businesses large and small. Cyber-crime works by exposing vulnerabilities in a business’s IT security system, and, if you don’t have the necessary security controls in place, your business could be exposed. Cyber Essentials works by highlighting potential security issues and providing guidance on the actions businesses should take to overcome them. As well as enabling you to protect your data, it can also boost existing and potential customers’ trust, showing them that you have taken government-approved steps to secure your systems and protect their data.

Why Cyber Essentials is important

With the new General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) coming into force on 25th May 2018, it is more important than ever for businesses to invest in their cyber-security. Cyber Essentials can help businesses (especially SMEs) prepare for and comply with the new GDPR laws.
