Time to update Windows 7

Why you must replace your Windows 7 machines now

Many businesses are still relying on Windows 7 machines, and no wonder – it’s a great operating system. But in January 2020, Windows 7 will reach the end of its life. That means Microsoft will no longer support or update it and at that point this popular operating system will become increasingly unsafe to use.

When software is unsupported, it becomes a massive target for hackers. In fact some cyber experts believe hackers are already sitting on vulnerabilities they will exploit after January 2020.

The UK’s tech security body, the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), has issued a reminder about the Windows 7 deadline on its website and warns of the risks of running software without support: “Malware can spread much more easily on obsolete platforms because, without security updates, known vulnerabilities will remain unpatched. As a result, it’s crucial to move away from them as quickly as possible.”

We’ve created a new short video to tell you why it’s such a problem, and why you mustn’t wait till long to replace your old tech…

Keeping Windows 7 machines running has cost implications too. Microsoft has said that it will extend support for Windows 7 extended security updates after support ends on 14 January 2020  – but only at a price. According to a recent report in Zdnet.com, clients who opt for paid security updates on their Windows 7 machines will have to pay a fee per Windows 7 machine and should expect Microsoft’s update pricing to double each year.

Keeping software up to date is one of the most effective ways of keeping your networks and devices safe – and managing your costs. You can’t afford to leave your business’s precious data at risk, especially when the answer is simple – upgrade now to the newer Windows 10 which is also a great operating system, and a lot more future proof.
